Rivers and harbors

Filming on the Danube, the largest river in Austria, is free on registered ships. For permits, apply three weeks in advance at the Senior Navigation Authority of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Innovation and Technology. The river can only be closed for filming under excep­tional circumstances. When using a non-regis­tered vessel (for example an antique ship) a special transportation permit is required. For any filming on the banks of Danube river which, in any way, impairs river traffic (e.g. strobe lights or fireworks), a permit must be obtained from the Senior Navigation Authority of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Innovation and Technology.

The DDSG Blue Danube is the largest and most modern operator of day trips and ad­venture trips around Vienna and into the Wachau wine region. A charter ship, the MS Admiral Tegetthoff, is available for productions. The Lower Austrian company Brandner offers both a ship (MS Austria) and a wooden raft, suitable for 150 people. The raft operates a 32 mi (20 km) stretch on the Danube.

Filming in ports requires a special permit from the responsible river or harbor administration. If ship operators are impeded in unloading their cargo as a result of temporary closure, addi­tional fees will apply.

Lakes

The regional district administrations are re­sponsible for issuing permits for filming on Austrian lakes. Regulations regarding per­mits, vessel registration and traffic regulations vary from province to province.

On some Austrian lakes (e.g. Wolfgangsee and Attersee) motor boats are generally banned during the months of July and August. A special arrangement can be made for the Traunsee in Upper Austria.

Filming without permit is allowed on the Woerthersee in Carinthia, as long as vessels are properly registered. Permits for non-regis­tered vessels need to be requested from the State Government in Carinthia four weeks prior to filming.
